A few months ago, I got a really cool unboxing experience. Oaka Derby has become something I’ve hardly ever seen in the market so far. Although some brands have tested the waters with their barefoot shoes for more official dress codes, their visuals aren’t close to the achievement of the Oaka Studio company.
This brand has tried to elevate the minimalist style of footwear, and the results of this excellent job are vivid — just take a look at how stunning this pair looks. If you don’t know about this feature, it’s hard to tell that it comes with a barefoot surprise in the kit.
Of course, it’s not just about how the silhouette’s aesthetic profile. Long story short, with this product, I get as many barefoot ideals without sacrificing the timeless statement of dress shoes as possible.

Core Insights
One thing is for sure — you won’t sink your money into a product that won’t last when it comes to Oaka Derby. Although I bought it pretty recently, everyday use has proven how durable these shoes can be. They also retain their shape wonderfully. They survived through a couple of business trips with careful packaging with ease.
Pros:
- A barefoot-comfortable pair of dress shoes for the office and other settings
- A flexible and thin sole for a great ground feel
- A zero-drop silhouette for natural foot alignment and improved posture
- Machine-wash-friendly
- Sustainable manufacturing techniques, including its special rPET knit upper
- Slip-resistant
Cons:
- They are a bit stiff right out of the box, but stretchy materials and a little break-in period will be helpful
- Not ideal for heavy outdoor use
- A limited range of sizes, from 8 US to 13 US
Style & Design
Although this model isn’t pointy, I think that’s for the better. Oaka Derby doesn’t compromise on its aesthetics — they still look extremely elegant on the foot. What’s more important, these shoes don’t make it visually larger, which is a common problem of minimalist footwear. Of course, don’t forget about its wide-toe-boxed and zero-drop silhouette — staple features for barefoot comfort.

It’s available in three versions. The stack height is around 11 millimeters. My only critique will be that its Ink Black style is with a light greyish undertone.
| Pros | Cons: |
| This minimalist silhouette features a modern flyknit upper and is suitable for office and casual wear. | In comparison with real leather, it may feel too modern, which doesn’t work for certain dress codes. |
| This slip-on model comes with elastic laces for convenient use. | While the eco-friendly materials are stretchy and more forgiving in terms of fit, this type of laces may be less adjustable than traditional analogs. |
Fit & Traction
Its wide toe box is spacious but not bulky — the best of two worlds for lovers of classic footwear with foot-health-oriented features. It allows for a natural toe splay, which, in turn, has a great impact on your posture and gait. What I truly love is how its tread pattern is made. It isn’t super deep, compromising on the ground feel. Instead, its complex and well-thought-out design is the key to slip resistance.

Comfort & Seasonality
Right out of the box, it may be a bit stiff in the heel and ankle zone. While the fit is overall forgiving, the range of sizes is limited. The brand suggests going for a smaller fit if you are between sizes, and I can’t help but agree — they may be too large, otherwise. Nonetheless, these offer all-day comfort. Without natural insulation, it’s better for indoor use or when it’s dry and warm outdoors.
Durability & Maintenance
Even for avid fans of traditional leather dress shoes, these deliver great value. In comparison, though, they are more comfortable to wear and accommodate different foot types and volumes. This pair is definitely well-constructed, with all stitching made precisely and neatly. I would just be cautious of how you clean it. While it’s machine-wash-friendly, wrong settings for the cycle may ruin the integrity of the eco-friendly knit upper.

| Pros | Cons |
| The rPET fkyknit material is lightweight and durable, also capable of maintaining its shape over time (in my case, so far, so good). | It requires gentle care and maintenance for prolonged use without issues. |
| Surprisingly, it is also flexible. This fabric is easy to clean, too. | This elastic material may be a double-edged sword if the fit becomes looser than anticipated. |
Final Thoughts: Is Oaka Derby Worth It?
In my hands-on experience, Oaka Derby certainly lives up to its ever-increasing popularity. Its appeal as classic dress shoes is great and outperforms what other minimalist footwear can provide you with in this regard. Its look is versatile, with office-ready aesthetics combined with foot-health-oriented benefits — zero-drop, lightweight, wide-toe-boxed, flexible, and so on.

With the right maintenance strategy, they will provide you with all-day comfort for casual and professional settings. What’s your first impression of Oaka Derby? Let’s discuss in the comment section.
